About Us
Welcome to Debunking Medieval Art Slander!
Our mission is very simple, we want to challenge the widespread misinformation about medieval art and provide accurate context, analysis and literacy! Too often, these works are written off as crude or primitive without any real understanding of the culture, technique, or symbolism behind them.
Why Medieval Art?
Medieval art is often misunderstood because it looks very different from the more realistic styles that came later, like those of the Renaissance. But those differences were intentional and reflected the values and beliefs of the time. Medieval artists weren't focused on realism; instead, they aimed to convey deep religious and spiritual meanings. The use of exaggerated proportions and stylized forms wasn't a mistake; it was a deliberate choice to express complex theological ideas and encourage spiritual reflection.
Our Mission
At Debunking Medieval Art Slander, our goal is to correct common misconceptions by offering a well-informed perspective on the true significance of medieval art. Through this site, we provide historical context for artistic conventions that are often overlooked, showing how these elements had specific purposes in their time. Whether it’s the way hands or eyes were portrayed, or the overall art style, we’re here to demonstrate that medieval artists weren’t lacking in skill, they were simply working within different artistic and cultural frameworks.
